Try These Spring Exercises to Become Summer-Ready

Spring is all about nice weather and fresh air, which is why it comes as no surprise that this is the best season for outdoor activity. After all the heavy meals and cold weather of the winter season, spring helps you let loose and get active to shed those extra pounds you might have put on over the holidays.

Unsure about how to get back into the groove and make the most of your spring season workout? Here are some options to kick your winter lifestyle to the curb and start trimming down for the coming summer season.

Hiking in the Great Outdoors: Summer is the best time of year for walking and hiking, not only around your neighborhood and on local trails, but also outside of your community and in national parks. Plan a trip to the closest hiking trails and soak up some spring sun. Make the most of your hike by dressing in layers, packing healthy snacks, and bringing plenty of drinking water.

The shoes you wear on your feet during your hike can also make a big difference not just to your level of enjoyment, but to the number of benefits you reap physically. Walking and hiking in the wrong shoes can hurt your knees, back, and feet. You want something that will grip the terrain, offer arch support, and absorb shock as you walk. Be sure to plan your trip before setting out on a train, and always let somebody know where you’re heading before you enter a wooded area such as a forest.

Bike Riding with the Family: Biking is a fun way to get everybody in the family involved in a physical activity but it’s difficult to bike in the heat of the summer, or maneuver through the slush and snow that winter brings. This makes spring and fall the ultimate times of year to enjoy your bicycle.

Take your bikes around the block after dinner to burn calories before the sun sets or plan a day trip with your bike as the main event. Pack a picnic lunch, load the bikes onto the bike rack of your vehicle, and find some trails where you can let loose and really ride. To make things more fun, bring a battery-operated radio so everybody can listen to the music as you ride. For a solo rude, an ipod and earbuds will do the trick.

Tennis and Baseball: There’s a season for every sport and as the spring season finally melts away the last of the snow and invites the sun to show its bright face once more, sports like tennis and baseball make a comeback. Both these sports are great ways to stay fit this time of the year, helping you to incorporate your whole body into the workout. Tennis is especially great for the upper body strength, while baseball works more on your legs and core.

Not sure how to get started with tennis and baseball this year? Check with your local community center for information on adult sports teams in your area. Nothing available? Start your own by gaging interest from other parents at your kids’ school or by sending out some feelers through social media. Local sports are not only a great way to stay fit physically, but to improve social

Outdoor Workouts: Squats, lunges, and push-ups can provide muscle maintenance and calorie burning inside, but they’re even better when performed outside. According to a 2013 scientific study published in the Journal of Extreme Physiology and Medicine, titled The Great Outdoors: How a Green Exercise Environment Can Benefit All, the combination of fresh air, green plants, and physical activity can increase your overall health in both body and mind.

No matter what workouts you enjoy most, try to take them outside this spring season. Whether that means dragging the weight bench onto the back deck or taking your standard stationary bike ride onto the real thing, allow yourself to enjoy the nice weather while it’s here. As the sun shines harder and summer begins to form, you can add other daily activities, such as swimming to your exercise roster, but for now, anything that allows you to mix nature and physical fitness is great.
